On the = American=20 Monasticism =93Question=94

It is with great sadness and a = heavy heart=20 that I find it necessary to write to your website regarding a = topic that=20 was brought forth in a recent letter titled =93The=20 Ephraim Question=94 [see http= ://old.orthodoxnews.com/43/The%20Ephraim%20Question.htm].

The=20 article=92s author (Paul Cromidas) appears to be overly concerned = about the=20 movement that Greek Orthodox monasticism and Elder Ephraim = have=20 brought to America and the =93impact among the clergy and theology = students=20 at Holy Cross.=94  He goes on to formalize his = suspicions=20 through inferences that may/may not have been made by a couple of = Greek=20 Orthodox hierarchs.   He then reaches into the past and = brings=20 up the name of His Eminence, Archbishop Spyridon and Fr. George = Passias to=20 further make his questionable point.  Finally, he goes on to = label a=20 group of people as =93Ephraimites=94 (I imagine those who go to = monasteries),=20 and brings up complaints of clergy and laity on issues of = confession=20 without any real references.  At the end, he demands a reply = on the=20 Elder =93Ephraim question=94 from the hierarchy of the Greek = Orthodox Church,=20 as if his life depended on it.  At no point does he ever make = a=20 connection on how he, as a Greek = Orthodox=20 Christian has (or will) benefit from this whole issue=92s=20 resolution.  In a general sense, his letter is very=20 GOAL-ish...

Before addressing Paul Cromidas=92 = letter, it is=20 necessary that a clarification be made on some of the realities of = our=20 current situation as the Church of Christ.  It is widely = accepted=20 that we live in a culture of narcissistic egotism, whereby the = material=20 success of the individual outweighs the common good, and where our = children are taught daily that the ends justify the means.  = Our=20 spiritual salvation and survival, as a group, is at stake now more = than=20 ever before in the 2,000-year history of Orthodoxy.  I = realize that a=20 thesis can be written on this issue alone.  That is not my = intent; I=20 do believe strongly though, that given the drastic condition of = social=20 life today in America it is imperative that we  learn to=20 cultivate  an ever-increasing attentiveness to matters of=20 spirituality if we are to realize our salvation.

The sad fact is that Greek = Orthodoxy in=20 America has deviated severely from her path in the very few years = of this=20 Archdiocese's life. One needs only observe events at his local = parish=20 level to realize this.  I point out some personal = observations made=20 at five to six parishes that I have been a part of in the last = twenty plus=20 years.

  • Our = faithful are, for=20 the most part, completely ignorant of their Faith, often quoting = heretical ideas that they heard from others, not being able to=20 distinguish between Orthodox and Catholic = theology. =

  • The = Liturgy has been=20 shortened to accommodate the Sunday, post-Liturgy entertainment = "needs"=20 of the faithful (NFL, NBA, soccer leagues or plain coffee hour=20 socializing). The post-Liturgy coffee hour is almost as long as = our=20 Liturgy.

  • There = exist churches=20 where the parish coffee "lounge" is in the basement of the = church where=20 gossiping, dancing, eating and other questionable activities = take place=20 right under the Holy Altar.

  • Holy = Communion has=20 become =93Sunday morning candy=94 for most. One observes men and = women=20 approaching to partake of His Body and Blood with gum in their = mouth,=20 hands in pockets and questionable attire. Women show up in = provocative=20 and scandalizing attire, from super mini skirts, all the way to = bare=20 back outfits and dresses held up by thin straps. Most important, = priests=20 accept it all, saying nothing (even when the faithful complain) = and=20 instead go after older Greek women who wish to wear scarves = while in=20 Church.

  • Fasting = and=20 confession have become too Orthodox for most. I have seen cream = cheese=20 and bagels offered during Lent (at the coffee social) and I hear = priests=20 tell the faithful that they should only come to confession only = if=20 something they have done is bad and really bothers them. My = priest=20 friends even tell me how, quite often they are scandalized by = their=20 fellow clergymen who do not keep the Wednesday/Friday fast (or = even the=20 fasts of Great Lent or Advent)  and make them feel guilty = or=20 =93weird=94 if they do!

  • Our = priests come out=20 of the seminaries full of the modern psychology theories, with = fully=20 protestant views, taught very little about the Church Fathers = and fully=20 unprepared to lead flocks. Their sermons are full of antitheses = and=20 heretical ideas. I have heard one repeatedly eulogize mother = Teresa (as=20 if we run short of Orthodox saints). Another prominent graduate = calls=20 the symbol of Byzantium =93burnt chicken=94 and he tells us that = this title=20 was common among his colleagues. Another one informs his = flock=20 that Christ was not really perfect until after He died on the = Cross.=20 Finally, one brought a Catholic Bishop during Liturgy and placed = him on=20 the Orthodox Bishop's throne.

  • Oh, and = then we have=20 the organ accompanied choirs, or as I call them =93group of = want-to-be=20 opera singers=94. They make a mockery of Byzantine chanting. I = will never=20 forget the case of a (musically gifted) priest who took it upon = himself=20 to write his own Doxology...

  • The = majority of=20 parishes are fostering an anti-Hellenic spirit which is rapidly = removing=20 anything Greek from within the parish. Naturally, for three days = of the=20 year, they all become excellent Greeks during the annual Greek = Festival=20 when budget dictates they undertake a pretentious role and = praise their=20 heritage. On Monday it is all cleaned up, the Greek paper flags = are in=20 the trash and we are back to criticizing anything=20 Hellenic.

  • Priesthood has become=20 just another profession, and a well paying one at that. Priests = make=20 close to $100,000 (before any =93gifts=94), offer a limited = (usually two)=20 liturgies per week and are mostly pre-occupied with the wants = and needs=20 of the community=92s self-declared (wealthy and loud) = leaders.  These=20 are usually a few wealthy parishioners who equate their worldly = success=20 with the right to throw their weight around in all facets of the = church=92s business, including liturgical aspects!   = They are=20 commonly described as the "I paid for the church building so do = what I=20 say", good ole boys...

  • The = attire of most=20 priests outside of the Church is very un-Orthodox.  One can = count=20 in two hands the number of priests that wear their rassa off = Church=20 premises.  There exist Orthodox jurisdictions where the=20 rassa-wearing priests are threatened with suspension if they = refuse to=20 conform.

  • The = concept of=20 Christian Love is prevalent within the sermons of most priests = without a=20 clear understanding of the spiritual values of either Christ=92s = Love or=20 all other theological aspects of the miracle we call=20 Orthodoxy.

This is = the reality and=20 these are and have been the prevalent conditions of the = Orthodox=20 parishes throughout America for a very long = time. =20 Within such spiritually bankrupt conditions, there were still a = great=20 number of pious Orthodox Christians the prayers of whom God = answered=20 through the arrival of monasticism in America.  Any person = who has=20 studied monasticism (or spent time at the Holy Mountain) would = know that=20 monasticism has provided us a path out of the spiritual abyss that = we have=20 been on for a very long time.  Paul Cromidas can certainly = visit the=20 monasteries that these monks came from and he would observe that = they had=20 a perfect monastic atmosphere.  They did not need to abandon = the=20 spiritual peace and tranquil conditions of the Holy Mountain to = realize=20 any personal gain.  Mr. Cromidas, the monastics did not go to = vacation in Vegas or Atlantic City; they instead set to tame a = tough and=20 unforgiving desert and have been providing spiritual comfort, = guidance and=20 prayers to all that ask, irrespective of social standing or stock=20 portfolio value.  They have received zero assistance from the = Archdiocese and have in return been persecuted by priests and even = some=20 hierarchs who have often admonished parishioners for =93daring to = go to a=20 monastery.=94  Such priests have gone as far as to inform = parishioners=20 that they could not partake of the sacraments if they did not = disassociate=20 themselves from the monasteries (we are aware of such cases in = Florida and=20 Chicago).  We are also informed that Holy Cross seminarians = are=20 extremely careful to not show any empathy towards monasticism for = they=20 will become =93marked men=94 as one of them shared with us.  = Those that=20 are fond of monasticism must maintain their admiration in secret = for the=20 consequences are grave.

Mr. Cromidas also makes various = allegations=20 that the monasteries are =93cult=94 centers and that Elder Ephraim = is a =93cult=94=20 leader, thus following a popular notion among the anti-monastics = of our=20 Archdiocese.  We all know only too well how this term has = come to=20 be.  Rather than entertain the readers with the travesty of = these=20 allegations, I limit my observations to just one.  It is = important=20 for all of us to realize that we, here in America, are spiritually = very=20 immature, and we are very quick to jump to conclusions based upon = our own=20 ignorance.  Unless we know otherwise, we should assume that = Elder=20 Ephraim is a good and wise monastic leader and a true disciple of = St.=20 Joseph the Hesychast (his glorification by the Ecumenical = Patriarchate is=20 taking place this coming year we are told).  Maybe he is even = more=20 than that.  But we should not speak of him in exaggerated=20 terms--either as a "cult leader" OR a "living saint."  This = is not=20 how sober and mature Orthodox Christians think and=20 speak.

The=20 answer as to why monasticism came to America is very simple.  = Because=20 God answered the prayers of pious Orthodox in this great nation = and=20 utilized the monastics to fill the great spiritual void within our = Archdiocese.  Yes, Mr. Cromidas, it is true: Elder Ephraim is = indeed=20 doing God=92s Will and it is wrong and blasphemous for you and = your friends=20 to claim otherwise.  Do you recall when GOAL and OCL were = organized a=20 few years ago and had put forth the claim of salvation for = Orthodoxy in=20 America?  This claim came from people that consider = spirituality as=20 something that a Buddhist monk cooks in the Himalayas; we all know = that=20 they are so wrapped up in the power and control games and lawsuits = that=20 they could not recognize God=92s Will even if it was playing at = the local=20 theater.  Why is it that you and your friends never dare = question=20 their Divine purpose but select to pick on men and women = that have=20 dedicated their life to Christ?

It is customary nowadays to = discuss charters=20 and conditions of autocephaly for this Archdiocese and that=20 Patriarchate.  It makes one wonder as to what type of Charter = the=20 Christians of the most blessed period of Christianity had, the = first three=20 hundred years.  History teaches us that they did not even = have the=20 Bible yet -- they went by the Apostolic Canons, a set of rules = that had=20 very little to do with governance and everything to do with=20 salvation.  Is it any wonder that they produced thousands of = saints=20 while the last 200 years of American Orthodoxy have produced = none? =20 Are perhaps the priorities being placed on areas that inhibit vs. = promote=20 salvation?  The Holy Fathers teach us that within the Church = there is=20 potential to =93produce relics,=94 so, if our parishes are not = working towards=20 producing saints, then perhaps they are failing at their primary = (and=20 perhaps only) function.  Our Church is NOT ours -- it is His = Bride=20 and those in charge of one side or another will all be accountable = as to=20 how She is governed or treated.  It is on this issue that all = American faithful must note that our Greek Orthodox monasticism = here (as=20 well as in Greece) has not deviated from this goal.  To = suggest that=20 we impose our worldly will and methods on Elder Ephraim and the=20 monasteries in America would constitute a spiritual crime!  = Can one=20 imagine, Mr. Cromidas, a set of persons like you and me trying to = tell=20 them how to run something that has existed for hundreds of=20 years?

As for the =93money=94 question, = within an article=20 by this website=92s financiers (OCL), we read of the =93threat=94 = to (once=20 again) sue the Archdiocese.  A familiar theme -- it reminds = one of=20 the GOAL days.  In specific, under the article =93OCL = Requests to Meet=20 with Archbishop to Forestall Legal Action,=94 we = read:

=93Litigation is very=20 costly for all concerned, not only monetarily but also in so = many=20 other aspects,=94 said Dr. Haikalis.   Therefore = it is=20 taken only as a last resort after all other efforts have proven = fruitless.=20 But, if that is the only course available to preserve for the = Greek=20 Orthodox faithful of this Archdiocese their historic role in the=20 governance of their church, OCL is prepared to take the steps = necessary,=20 he stated.=94

Well,=20 we now know for sure that the long honeymoon of Archbishop = Demetrios has=20 truly come to an end and here come the piranhas.  May I = suggest to=20 Paul Cromidas (and all others who are concerned with monasticism = funds)=20 that they invest some time demanding of their =93self-appointed=94 = leaders to=20 quit threatening (and eventually suing) the Archdiocese thus causing the deficits over which Paul = Cromidas=20 appears to be so distraught?  The monasteries never have (and = never=20 will) ask for (or receive) any type of funding from the = Archdiocese. =20 If the Archdiocese finances are suffering it is certainly not = because of=20 the monasteries; the root cause lies within the attitudes and = wasteful=20 actions that are prevalent and exhibited by the Archdioceses=92 = and her=20 enemies=92 leaders, whether they are elected or self = appointed.  As far=20 as Paul Cromidas=92 claim on how =93ironic it is that the Ephraim = monasteries=20 do not appear to have money problems,=94 one dares ask him the = question on=20 how he knows that?  I mean what is his source?  He = surely knows=20 that the monasteries are not selling plaques and titles to their = donors=20 nor do they pass an offering plate during services.  So, if = this is=20 true, how then is it done?  It surely makes one wonder!  = Does=20 this not teach Paul Cromidas and his =93associates=94 a lesson = that the=20 Centurion and Noble titles for sale at the Archdiocese and = Patriarchate=20 level are making a mockery of our religion?  Is it possible = that God=20 is also not blessing our Archdiocese because of our abandoning His = Divine=20 Will?  One needs only read the history of the Latins and the = pope=92s=20 forgiveness papers fiasco to draw a similar = parallel.

And what do we read?  Mr. = Cromidas is=20 concerned about historic roles as they involve the church?  = That is=20 wonderful; here then is some history on monasticism.  It was=20 established by St. Anthony the Great, before the First Ecumenical = Synod --=20 in other words, it has existed for well over 1,700 years; so that = we=20 maintain the proper perspective, this is eight times longer than = the=20 history of this nation and some 15 times longer than the = Archdiocese of=20 America=92s life!  My experience tells me that we should be = asking=20 them to help us run our Archdiocese = vs. us=20 trying to oversee them.

And=20 what is this now that laity demands involvement in the governance = of His=20 Church?  I believe that in America, we have a group of = self-styled=20 Orthodox reformers who use their limited knowledge to further = their=20 cause.  They know that they must at least act a little = religious from=20 time to time if they hope to attract the faithful towards their = cause.=20 Thus, they use bits and pieces of writings from church history, = which=20 happen to emphasize the place of the laity in the Church to = bolster their=20 position. They offer such quotes as proof that the laity should = have a=20 "much greater voice." The truth though is that they take such = arguments=20 completely out of context to help them in what is fundamentally a=20 dishonest, anti-hierarchical crusade for power.  Laity = involvement=20 in the historic Church has principally been through the monastic=20 community, philanthropy and intellectual pursuits.  =20 Furthermore, the laity involved in the affairs of the Historic = Church=20 were not a pack of secularized Americans ashamed of their own=20 tradition!  Nor have the laity in the historic church been a = group of=20 wealthy Greek-Americans who think that parish councils =93own=94 = the church or=20 that because they are wealthy they have the =93right=94 to = fire Archbishops and tell the Patriarch what to=20 do.

His Church is simply not for = sale!  We=20 are all very well aware of the handful of very wealthy and = powerful=20 Greek-Americans who are highly self-aware regarding their material = success=20 in America. These Greeks are determined to be socially acceptable = to the=20 surrounding culture. This group is offended by the fact that they = are=20 unable to control the Patriarch and appoint bishops at will, in = other=20 words establish the American campaign-type funding-driven = political=20 election system on His Church.  This is a dangerous approach = that=20 must NEVER be allowed to exist.  Those few OCL leaders that = are=20 ideologically committed to this modernist approach are wrong and = may end=20 up causing the demise of Orthodoxy as we know it.  We are all = aware=20 that they have the support of several liberally inclined priests, = some=20 faculty at the seminary, some feminists, some Orthodox from other=20 jurisdictions and others who are quietly trying to change the = Orthodox=20 Church and make it =93modern.=94  May God prevent them from = realizing=20 their =93dream.=94

My thought is that Paul Cromidas = is another=20 pawn in the game that is being played by the powerful elite who = wish to=20 gain control on anything and everything that bears the Orthodox = name,=20 monasteries inclusive.  We know that, as well as we know that = their=20 actions are NOT of God and that they will not go unnoticed.  = So, as=20 Paul Cromidas and his friends sit in smoke-filled rooms = plotting=20 the control of everything and anything, they need to remember that = this is=20 His Bride, He is Omnipotent and that He will judge us all.  = St.=20 Ephraim the Syrian said that =93fear of God is instrumental in the = development of a relationship with Christ which may then lead us = all into=20 salvation.=94  I pray that all the Paul Cromidases of America = come to=20 their senses and commence living the life that He would want us = all to=20 live, addressing the issues and problems that He would wish us to=20 resolve.

In=20 closing, I wish to suggest to Mr. Cromidas (as well as Orthodox = News and=20 OCL at large) that our society is plagued with an over-abundance = of social=20 as well as moral issues; our spiritual health is at stake every = single day=20 and we are all in constant danger of losing the Heavenly seat = prepared for=20 all of us by our Lord and Savior.  To attack monasticism, the = very=20 foundation, defender and spiritual warriors of Orthodoxy for the = last two=20 millennia, is not only illogical but a grave sin against = God.  His=20 Saints, most of them monastic themselves, will hold accountable = those who=20 for purely worldly reason persecute the Living Well of Orthodox=20 Spirituality.  May He enlighten our words, actions and = thoughts and=20 may He lead Mr. Cromidas into realizing the wrongfulness of his = unfounded=20 criticism towards Elder Ephraim and all other Greek Orthodox = monastics=20 in this blessed nation of ours.  = Mr.=20 Cromidas, they have done nothing to you or those close to = you.  Let=20 them be!

In Christ our Lord and=20 Savior,
