Introduction

It is my understanding that = there is no=20 single "right" way of celebrating the Typica service. This present = edition=20 reflects the usage at the Church in Mulino, OR., which was in use long = before=20 this poor sinner was lead there.

The Psalms are taken from the Psalter according to = the=20 seventy, Translated from the Septuagint Version of the Old Testament = by the=20 Holy Transfiguration Monastery in Boston, Massachusetts; most of the = text has=20 been appropriated from works by Rassaphor-monk Laurence of Holy Trinity=20 Monastery in Jordanville, NY, whose excellent translations from the = Slavonic=20 Texts into English should be better known in the Church Abroad; other = parts of=20 the text comes from a prayer book bublished by the Fathers at = Holy=20 Trinity Monastery in Jordanville; Mother Mary from the Orthodox = Monastery of the=20 Veil of Our Lady in Bussy-en-Othe, France has provided the translation = of the=20 octoechos used in this edition.

Comments on Reader Services by Archbishop Averky

(An excerpted from "The Typicon of the Orthodox = Church=92s=20 Divine Services: The Orthodox Christian and the Church Situation=20 Today.")

Archbishop Averky of Holy Trinity Monastery at = Jordanville, New=20 York, makes some remarks in a report concerning the "Internal Mission" = of the=20 Church which was approved by the whole Council of Bishops of the Russian = Church=20 Outside of Russia in 1962:

"It is extremely important for the success of the = Internal=20 Mission to attract, as far as possible, all the faithful into one or = another=20 kind of active participation in the Divine services, so that they might = not feel=20 themselves merely idle spectators or auditors who come to Church as to a = theater=20 just in order to hear the beautiful singing of the choir which performs, = as=20 often happens now, totally unchurchly, bravura, theatrical compositions. = It is=20 absolutely necessary to re-establish the ancient custom, which is indeed = demanded by the Typicon itself, of the singing of the whole = people at=20 Divine services=85 It is a shame to the Orthodox faithful not to know = its own=20 wondrous, incomparable Orthodox Divine services, and therefore it is the = duty of=20 the pastor to make his flock acquainted with the Divine services, which = may be=20 accomplished most easily of all by way of attracting the faithful into = practical=20 participation."

Further, in the same article Archbishop Averky = dispels the=20 popular misconception that Orthodox Christians are not allowed to = perform any=20 church services without a priest, and that therefore the believing = people become=20 quite helpless and are unable to pray when they find themselves without = a=20 priest. He writes, on the same page of this article:

"According to our Typicon, all the Divine services of = the daily=20 cycle =97 apart, needless to say, from the Divine Liturgy and other = Church=20 sacraments =97 may be performed also by persons not ordained to priestly = rank.=20 This has been widely done in the practice of prayer by all monasteries, = sketes,=20 and desert-dwellers in whose midst there are no monks clothed in the = rank of=20 priest. And up until the most recent time this was to be seen also, for = example,=20 in Carpatho-Russia, which was outstanding for the high level of piety of = its=20 people, where in case of the illness or absence of the priest, the = faithful=20 themselves, without a priest, read and sang the Nocturnes, and Matins, = and the=20 Hours, and Vespers, and Compline, and in place of the Divine Liturgy, = the=20 Typica.

"In no way can one find anything whatever = reprehensible in=20 this, for the texts themselves of our Divine services have foreseen such = a=20 possibility, for example, in such a rubric which is often encountered in = them:=20 =91If a priest is present, he says: Blessed is our God=85 If not, = then say=20 with feeling: By the prayers of our Holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ = our God,=20 have mercy on us. Amen.=92 And further there follows the whole order = of the=20 Divine services in its entirety, except of course, for the ectenes and = the=20 priestly responses. The longer extenes are replaced by the reading of = =91Lord,=20 have mercy=92 twelve times, and Little Ectene by the reading of =91Lord, = have mercy=92=20 three times.

"Public prayer, as none other, firmly unites the = faithful. And=20 so, in all those parishes where there is no permanent priest, it is = absolutely=20 necessary not merely to permit, but indeed to recommend to the faithful = that=20 they come together on Sundays and feast days in church or even in homes, = where=20 there is no church, in order to perform together such public prayer = according to=20 the established order of Divine services."

This normal church practice, which like so much else = that=20 belongs to the best Orthodox Church tradition, has become so rare today = as to=20 seem rather a novelty, is nonetheless being practiced now in several = parishes of=20 the Russian Church Outside of Russia, as well as in some private homes. = This=20 practice can and should be greatly increased among the faithful, whether = it is a=20 question of a parish that has lost its priest or is to small to support = one, of=20 a small group of believers far from the nearest church which has not yet = formed=20 a parish, or a single family which is unable to attend church on every = Sunday=20 and feast day.

Indeed, this practice in many places has become the = only answer=20 to the problem of keeping alive the tradition of the Church=92s Divine=20 services=85.

The way of conducting such services should preferably = be=20 learned from those who already practice it in accordance with both the = written=20 and oral tradition of the Church. But even in the absence of such = guidance, an=20 Orthodox layman, when he is unable to attend church services, can derive = much=20 benefit from simply reading through some of the simpler services, much = as he=20 already reads Morning and Evening Prayers. Thus, he can read any of the = Hours=20 (First, Third, and Sixth Hours in the morning, Ninth Hour in the = afternoon),=20 which have no changeable parts except for the Troparion and Kontakion; = he can=20 simply read through the stichera of the great feasts on the appropriate = day; or=20 he can read the Psalms appointed for a given day=85.

The first hour

Reader: O Heavenly King, O Comforter, Spirit of = Truth, Who=20 art everywhere present and fillest all things, Treasury of good things = and Giver=20 of life: Come and dwell in us, and cleanse us of all impurities, and = save our=20 souls, O Good One.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on = us=20 (Thrice).

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy = Spirit,=20 both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, blot = out our=20 sins. O Master, pardon our iniquities. O Holy One, visit and heal our=20 infirmities for Thy name's sake.

Lord, have mercy (Thrice).

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy = Spirit,=20 both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, Who art in the heavens, hallowed be Thy = name. Thy=20 kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us = this day=20 our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; = and lead=20 us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. Amen.

Lord, have mercy (Twelve Times).

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy = Spirit,=20 both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

O come let us worship God our King. O come let us = worship and=20 fall down before Christ our King and God. O come let us worship and fall = down=20 before Christ Himself, our King and God.

Psalm 5

Unto my words give ear, O Lord; hear my cry. Attend = unto the=20 voice of my supplication, O my King and my God; for unto Thee will I = pray, O=20 Lord. In the morning Thou shalt hear my voice. In the morning shall I = stand=20 before Thee, and Thou shalt look upon me; for not a God that willest = iniquity=20 art Thou. He that worketh evil shall not dwell near Thee, nor shall=20 transgressors abide before Thine eyes. Thou hast hated all them that = work=20 iniquity; Thou shalt destroy all them that speak a lie. A man that is = bloody and=20 deceitful shall the Lord abhor. But as for me, in the multitude of Thy = mercy=20 shall I go into Thy house; I shall worship toward Thy holy temple in = fear of=20 Thee. O Lord, guide me in the way of Thy righteousness; because of mine = enemies,=20 make straight my way before Thee, for in their mouth there is no truth; = their=20 heart is vain. Their throat is an open sepulchre, with their tongues = have they=20 spoken deceitfully; judge them, O God. Let them fall down on account of = their=20 own devisings; according to the multitude of their ungodliness, cast = them out,=20 for they have embittered Thee, O Lord. And let all them be glad that = hope in=20 Thee; they shall ever rejoice, and Thou shalt dwell among them. And all = shall=20 glory in Thee that love Thy name, for Thou shalt bless the righteous. O = Lord, as=20 with a shield of Thy good pleasure hast Thou crowned us.

Psalm 89

Lord, Thou hast been our refuge in generation and = generation.=20 Before the mountains came to be and the earth was formed and the world, = even=20 from everlasting to everlasting Thou art. Turn not man away unto = lowliness; yea,=20 Thou hast said: Turn back, ye sons of men. For a thousand years in Thine = eyes, O=20 Lord, are but as yesterday that is past, and as a watch in the night. = Things of=20 no account shall their years be; in the morning like grass shall man = pass away.=20 In the morning shall he bloom and pass away, in the evening shall he = fall and=20 grow withered and dry. For we have fainted away in Thy wrath, and in = Thine anger=20 have we been troubled. Thou hast set our iniquities before Thee: our = life-span=20 is in the light of Thy countenance. For all our days are faded away, and = in Thy=20 wrath are we fainted away; our years have, like a spider, spun out their = tale.=20 As for the days of our years, in their span they be threescore years and = ten,=20 And if we be in strength, mayhap fourscore years; and what is more than = these is=20 toil and travail. For mildness is come upon us, and we shall be = chastened. Who=20 knoweth the might of Thy wrath? And out of fear of Thee, who can recount = Thine=20 anger? So make Thy right hand known to me, and to them that in their = heart are=20 instructed in wisdom. Return, O Lord; how long? And be Thou entreated = concerning=20 Thy servants. We were filled in the morning with Thy mercy, O Lord, and = we=20 rejoiced and were glad. In all our days, let us be glad for the days = wherein=20 Thou didst humble us, for the years wherein we saw evils. And look upon = Thy=20 servants, and upon Thy works, and do Thou guide their sons. And let the=20 brightness of the Lord our God be upon us, and the works of our hands do = Thou=20 guide aright upon us, yea, the works of our hands do Thou guide = aright.

Psalm 100

Of mercy and judgment will I sing unto Thee, O Lord; = I will=20 chant and have understanding in a blameless path. When wilt Thou come = unto me? I=20 have walked in the innocence of my heart in the midst of my house. I = have no=20 unlawful thing before mine eyes; the workers of transgressions I have = hated. A=20 crooked heart hath not cleaved unto me, as for the wicked man who turned = from=20 me, I knew him not. Him that privily talked against his neighbor did I = drive=20 away from me. With him whose eye was proud and his heart insatiate, I = did not=20 eat. Mine eyes were upon the faithful of the land, that they might sit = with me;=20 the man that walked in the blameless path, he ministered unto me. The = proud doer=20 dwelt not in the midst of my house; the seeker of unjust things = prospered not=20 before mine eyes. In the morning I slew all the sinners of the land, = utterly to=20 destroy out of the city of the Lord all them that work iniquity.

Reader: Glory to the = Father, and to the=20 Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of = ages.=20 Amen.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Glory to Thee, O God=20 (Thrice).

Lord, have mercy (Thrice).

Here we say the first troparion, if there be two. If = not:=20 Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Troparion of the Resurrection, or of the Feast, = then: Both=20 now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

And the Theotokion of the First Hour:

What shall we call thee, O thou that art full of = grace? Heaven:=20 for thou hast dawned forth the Sun of Righteousness. Paradise: for thou = hast=20 blossomed forth the Flower of Immortality. Virgin: for thou hast = remained=20 incorrupt. Pure Mother: for thou hast held in thy holy embrace the Son, = the God=20 of all. Do thou entreat Him to save our souls.

My steps do Thou direct according to Thy saying, and = let no=20 iniquity have dominion over me. Deliver me from the false accusation of = men, and=20 I will keep Thy commandments. Make Thy face to shine upon Thy servant, = and teach=20 me Thy statutes. Let my mouth be filled with Thy praise, O Lord, that I = may hymn=20 Thy glory and Thy majesty all the day long.

Give us = this day=20 our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors = sand lead=20 us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. Amen.

The Reader saith the appointed kontakion, If there be = two=20 kontakia, we read the kontakion that was chanted after the 3rd Ode of = the Canon=20 at Matins.

Then: Lord, have mercy (40 Times).

And then the prayer of the hour

Thou Who at all times and at every hour, in heaven = and on=20 earth, art worshipped and glorified, O Christ God, Who art = long-suffering,=20 plenteous in mercy, most compassionate, Who lovest the righteous and = hast mercy=20 on sinners, Who callest all to salvation through the promise of good = things to=20 come: Receive, O Lord, our prayers at this hour, and guide our life = toward Thy=20 commandments. Sanctify our souls, make chaste our bodies, correct our = thoughts,=20 purify our intentions, and deliver us from every sorrow, evil and pain. = Compass=20 us about with Thy holy angels, that, guarded and guided by their array, = we may=20 attain to the unity of the faith, and the knowledge of Thine = unapproachable=20 glory: for blessed art Thou unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Lord, have mercy (Thrice).

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy = Spirit,=20 both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare, = more=20 glorious than the Seraphim, thee who without corruption gavest birth to = God the=20 Word, the very Theotokos, thee do we magnify.

To thee the Champion Leader, we thy servants dedicate = a feast=20 of victory and of thanksgiving as ones rescued out of sufferings, O = Theotokos;=20 but as thou art one with might which is invincible, from all dangers = that can be=20 do thou deliver us, that we may cry to thee: Rejoice! thou Bride = unwedded.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy = Spirit,=20 both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Lord, have mercy (Thrice).

Bless, O Lord.

The third hour

O come let us worship God = our King. O=20 come let us worship and fall down before Christ our King and God. O come = let us=20 worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and God.

Psalm 16

Hearken, O Lord, unto my righteousness, attend unto = my=20 supplication. Give ear unto my prayer, which cometh not from deceitful = lips.=20 From before Thy face let my judgment come forth, let mine eyes behold=20 uprightness. Thou hast proved my heart, Thou hast visited it in the = night, Thou=20 hast tried me by fire, and unrighteousness was not found in me. That my = mouth=20 might not speak of the works of men, for the sake of the words of Thy = lips have=20 I kept the ways that are hard. Set my footsteps in Thy paths, that my = steps may=20 not be shaken. I have cried for Thou hast hearkened unto me, O God. = Incline=20 Thine ear unto me, and hearken unto my words. Let Thy mercies be made = wonderful,=20 O Thou that savest them that hope in Thee. From them that have resisted = Thy=20 right hand, keep me, O Lord, as the apple of Thine eye. In the shelter = of Thy=20 wings wilt Thou shelter me, from the face of the ungodly which have = oppressed=20 me. Mine enemies have surrounded my soul, they have enclosed themselves = with=20 their own fat, their mouth hath spoken pride. They that cast me out have = now=20 encircled me, they have set their eyes to look askance on the earth. = They have=20 taken me as might a lion ready for his prey, and as a lion's whelp that = dwelieth=20 in hiding. Arise, O Lord, overtake them and trip their heels; deliver my = soul=20 from ungodly men, Thy sword from the enemies of Thy hand. O Lord, from = Thy few=20 do Thou separate them from the earth in their life; yea, with Thy hidden = treasures hath their belly been filled. They have satisfied themselves = with=20 swine and have left the remnants to their babes. But as for me, in = righteousness=20 shall I appear before Thy face; I shall be filled when Thy glory is made = manifest to me.

Psalm 24

Unto thee, O lord, have I lifted up my soul. O my = God, in Thee=20 have I trusted; let me never be put to shame, nor let mine enemies laugh = me to=20 scorn. Yea, let none that wait on Thee be put to shame (let them be = ashamed=20 which are lawless without a cause. Make Thy ways, O Lord, known unto me = and=20 teach me Thy paths. Lead me in Thy truth and teach me, for Thou art God = my=20 Savior; for on Thee have I waited all the day long. Remember Thy = compassions, O=20 Lord, and Thy mercies, for they are from everlasting. The sins of my = youth and=20 mine ignorance remember not; according to Thy mercy remember Thou me, = for the=20 sake of Thy goodness, O Lord. Good and upright is the Lord; therefore = will He=20 set a law for them that sin in the way. He will guide the meek in = judgment, He=20 will teach the meek His ways. All the ways of the Lord are mercy and = truth, unto=20 them that seek after His covenant and His testimonies. For the sake of = Thy name,=20 O Lord, be gracious unto my sin; for it is great. Who is the man that = feareth=20 the Lord? He will set him a law in the way which He hath chosen. His = soul shall=20 dwell among good things, and his seed shall inherit the earth. The Lord = is the=20 strength of them that fear Him, and His covenant shall be manifested = unto them.=20 Mine eyes I are ever toward the Lord, for He it is that will draw my = feet out of=20 the snare. Look upon me, and have mercy on me; for I am one = only-begotten and=20 poor. The afflictions of my heart are multiplied; bring me out from my=20 necessities. Behold my lowliness and my toil, and forgive all my sins. = Look upon=20 mine enemies, for they are multiplied, and with an unjust hatred have = they=20 halted me. Keep my soul and rescue me; let me not be put to shame, for I = have=20 hoped in Thee. The innocent and the upright have cleaved unto me, for I = waited=20 on Thee, O Lord. Redeem Israel, O God, out of all his afflictions.

Psalm 50

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great = mercy; and=20 according to the multitude of Thy compassions blot out my transgression. = Wash me=20 thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know = mine=20 iniquity, and mine sin is ever before me. Against Thee only have I = sinned and=20 done this evil before Thee, that Thou mightest be justified in Thy = words, and=20 prevail when Thou art judged. For behold, I was conceived in iniquities, = and in=20 sins did my mother bear me. For behold, Thou hast loved truth; the = hidden and=20 secret things of Thy wisdom hast Thou made manifest unto me. Thou shalt = sprinkle=20 me with hyssop, and I shall be made clean; Thou shalt wash me, and I = shall be=20 made whiter than snow. Thou shalt make me to hear joy and gladness; the = bones=20 that be humbled, they shall rejoice. Turn Thy face away from my sins, = and blot=20 out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a = right=20 spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy = Holy=20 Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation, and with Thy = governing=20 Spirit establish me. I shall teach transgressors Thy ways and the = ungodly shall=20 turn back unto Thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God. Thou God = of my=20 salvation; my tongue shall rejoice in Thy righteousness. O Lord, Thou = shalt open=20 my lips, and my mouth shall declare Thy praise. For if Thou hadst = desired=20 sacrifice, I had given it; with whole-burnt offerings Thou shalt not be = pleased.=20 A sacrifice unto God is a broken spirit; a heart that is broken and = humbled God=20 will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Thy good pleasure unto Sion and = let the=20 walls of Jerusalem be builded. Then shall Thou be pleased with a = sacrifice of=20 righteousness, with oblation and whole-burnt offerings. Then shall they = offer=20 bullocks upon Thine altar.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy = Spirit,=20 both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Amen.

And the Theotokion of the Third Hour:

O Theotokos, thou art the true vine that hath = blossomed forth=20 for us the Fruit of Life. Thee do we supplicates Intercede, O Lady, = together=20 with the holy apostles, that our souls find mercy.

Blessed is the Lord God, blessed is the Lord day by = day; the=20 God of our salvation shall prosper us along the way; our God is the God = of=20 salvation.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on = us=20 (Thrice).

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy = Spirit,=20 both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen

Give us = this day=20 our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; = and lead=20 us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. Amen.

The Reader saith the appointed kontakion. If there be = two=20 kontakia, we read the kontakion that was chanted after the 3rd Ode of = the Canon=20 at Matins.

Lord, have mercy (40 Times).

The prayer of the hour

Thou Who at all times and at every hour, in heaven = and on=20 earth, art worshipped and glorified, O Christ God, Who art = long-suffering,=20 plenteous in mercy, most compassionate, Who lovest the righteous and = hast mercy=20 on sinners, Who callest all to salvation through the promise of good = things to=20 come: Receive, O Lord, our prayers at this hour, and guide our life = toward Thy=20 commandments.

Bless, O Lord. Amen.

Prayer of St. Mardarius

O Sovereign God, the Father Almighty, O Lord, the = Only-begotten=20 Son, Jesus Christ, and Thou, O Holy Spirit, one Godhead, one Power; Have = mercy=20 on me a sinner, and by the judgments which Thou knowest, save me, Thine = unworthy=20 servant; for blessed art Thou unto the ages of ages. Amen.

The sixth hour

O come let us worship God = our King. O=20 come let us worship and fall down before Christ our King and God. O come = let us=20 worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and God.

Psalm 53

O God, in thy name save me, and in Thy strength do = Thou judge=20 me. O God, hearken unto my prayer, give ear unto the words of my mouth. = For=20 strangers are risen up against me, and mighty men have sought after my = soul and=20 have not set God before themselves. For behold, God helpeth me, and the = Lord is=20 the protector of my soul. He will bring evils upon mine enemies. Utterly = destroy=20 them by Thy truth. Willingly shall I sacrifice unto Thee; I will confess = Thy=20 name, O Lord, for it is good. For out of every affliction hast Thou = delivered=20 me, and mine eye hath looked down upon mine enemies.

Psalm 54

Give ear, O God, unto my prayer, and disdain not my=20 supplication; attend unto me, and hear me. I was grieved in my = meditation, and I=20 was troubled at the voice of the enemy and at the oppression of the = sinner;=20 because they have turned iniquity upon me, and with wrath were they = angry=20 against me. My heart is troubled within me, and the terror of death is = fallen=20 upon me. Fear and trembling are come upon me, and darkness hath covered = me. And=20 I said: Who will give me wings like a dove? And I will fly, and be at = rest. Lo,=20 I have fled afar off and have dwelt in the wilderness. I waited for God = that=20 saveth me from faint-heartedness and from tempest. Plunge them into the = depths,=20 O Lord, and divide their tongues, for I have seen iniquity and = gainsaying in the=20 city. Day and night they go round about her upon her walls; iniquity and = toil=20 and unrighteousness are in the midst of her. And usury and deceit have = not=20 departed from her streets. For if mine enemy had reviled me, I might = have=20 endured it. And if he that hateth me had spoken boastful words against = me, I=20 might have hid myself from him. But thou it was, O man of like soul with = me, my=20 guide and my familiar friend, thou who together with me didst sweeten my = repasts; in the house of God I walked with thee in oneness of mind. Let = death=20 come upon such ones, and let them go down alive into hades. For = wickedness is in=20 their dwellings, and in the midst of them. As for me, unto God have I = cried, and=20 the Lord hearkened unto me. Evening, morning, and noonday will I tell of = it and=20 will declare it, and He will hear my voice. He will redeem my soul in = peace from=20 them that draw nigh unto me, for they among many were with me. God will = hear,=20 and He will humble them, He that is before the ages. For to them there = is no=20 requital, because they have not feared God; He hath stretched forth His = hand in=20 retribution. They have defiled His covenant; they were scattered by the = wrath of=20 His countenance, and their hearts have convened. Their words were = smoother than=20 oil, and yet they are darts. Cast thy care upon the Lord, and He will = nourish=20 thee; He will never permit the righteous to be shaken. But Thou, O God, = shall=20 bring those men down into the pit of destruction. Bloody and deceitful = men shall=20 not live out half their days; but as for me, O Lord, I will hope in = Thee.

Psalm 90

He that dwelleth in the help of the Most High shall = abide in=20 the shelter of the God of heaven. He shall say unto the Lord: Thou art = my helper=20 and my refuge. He is my God, and I will hope in Him, For He shall = deliver thee=20 from the snare of the hunters and from every troubling word. With His = shoulders=20 will He overshadow thee, and under His wings shall thou have hope. With = a shield=20 will His truth encompass thee; thou shalt not be afraid for the terror = of night,=20 nor for the arrow that flieth by day, nor for the thing that walketh in=20 darkness, nor for the mishap and demon of noonday. A thousand shall fall = at thy=20 side, and ten thousand at thy right hand, but unto thee shall it not = come nigh.=20 Only with thine eyes shall thou behold, and thou shalt see the reward of = sinners. For Thou, O Lord, art my hope. On=20 their hands shall they bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot = against=20 a stone. Upon the asp and basilisk shall thou tread, and thou shalt = trample upon=20 the lion and dragon. For he hath set his hope on Me, and I will deliver = him; I=20 will shelter him because he hath known My name. He shall cry unto Me, = and I will=20 hearken unto him. I am with him in affliction, and I will rescue him and = glorify=20 him. With length of days will I satisfy him, and I will show him My=20 salvation.

Troparia and Kondakia

First tone

The troparion of the Resurrection

When the stone had been sealed by the Jews and when = the=20 soldiers were guarding Thy pure Body, O Savior, Thou didst rise on the = third day=20 and give life to the world. Therefore, the powers of heaven cried to = Thee, O=20 giver of life: Glory to Thy resurrection, O Christ! Glory to Thy = kingdom! Glory=20 to Thy providence, O only lover of men!

The kontakion of the Resurrection

Thou didst rise as God from the tomb with glory and = with=20 Thyself didst raise the world, and the nature of men sings to Thee as = God, and=20 death has vanished, and Adam dances for joy, O Lord, and Eve, now freed = from her=20 fetters rejoices, crying: Thou, O Christ, art He Who givest to all=20 resurrection.

The prokeimenon

Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we = have hoped=20 in Thee. Stichos: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous; praise is = meet for=20 the upright. Alleluia: O God Who givest avengement unto me and = hast=20 subdued peoples under me. Stichos: It is He that magnifieth the = salvation=20 of His king and worketh mercy for His anointed, for David and for his = seed unto=20 eternity.

Verses on the beatitudes

Through food, the enemy led Adam out of Paradise; and = through=20 the Cross Christ led the thief back into it crying: Remember me, O Lord, = when=20 Thou comest into Thy kingdom.

I venerate Thy sufferings and glorify Thy = resurrection. With=20 Adam and with the thief I raise a shining cry to Thee: Remember me, O = Lord, when=20 Thou comest into Thy kingdom.

Without sin, hast Thou been crucified, and of Thine = own will=20 hast Thou been laid in the tomb. But Thou as God hast risen raising Adam = with=20 Thyself, crying: Remember me, when Thou comest into Thy kingdom.

On the third day, O Christ our God, Thou hast raised = from the=20 tomb the temple of Thy "body raising with Thyself Adam and those = descending from=20 him, crying: Remember me when Thou comest into Thy kingdom.

The women bearing myrrh came early in the morning = lamenting to=20 Thy tomb, O Christ our God, and they found there an angel in shining = white=20 seated and crying; What do ye seek? Christ is risen, weep no more.

O Lord, Thine apostles as Thou hast ordered them were = beside=20 Thee on the mountain and seeing Thee. O Savior, they worshipped and Thou = hast=20 sent them forth to teach and to baptize the nations.

Second tone

The troparion of the Resurrection

When Thou, the deathless life, didst go down to = death, then=20 didst Thou slay hell by the lightening flash of Thy divinity. And when = Thou=20 didst raise the dead from the lower world, all the powers of heaven = cried aloud:=20 Christ our God, giver of life, glory to Thee.

The kontakion of the Resurrection

Thou didst rise from the tomb, all-powerful Savior, = and seeing=20 the miracle, hell was terrified, and the dead rose, whilst creation at = the sight=20 of it rejoices with Thee, and Adam exults, and the world, O my Savior, = ever=20 sings to Thee.

The prokeimenon

The Lord is my strength and my song, and He is become = my=20 salvation. Stichos: With chastisement hath the Lord chastened men = but He=20 hath not given me over unto death. Alleluia: The Lord hear thee = in the=20 day of affliction; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee. = Stichos: O=20 Lord, save the king, and hearken unto us in the day when we call upon = Thee.

Verses on the beatitudes

We offer Thee the voice of the thief and cry aloud to = Thee;=20 Remember us, O Savior in Thy kingdom.

We bring Thee the cross for the forgiveness of = offences. For us=20 hast Thou accepted it, O lover of mankind.

We venerate, O Master, Thy tomb and Thy rising, = through which=20 Thou hast delivered the world from corruption, O lover of mankind.

By Thy death, O Lord, death has been swallowed up, = and by Thy=20 resurrection, Savior, has the world been saved.

Those sleeping in darkness have seen Thee, the light, = and they=20 have risen out of the nethermost parts of hell, O Christ.

Risen from the tomb Thou hast met the women bearing = myrrh and=20 told the disciples to proclaim Thy rising.

Third tone

The troparion of the Resurrection

Let the heavens rejoice and let the earth be glad, = for the Lord=20 has done a mighty act with His arm. He has trampled death by death and = become=20 the first-born of the dead. He has delivered from the depths of hell, = and has=20 granted the world His great mercy.

The kontakion of the Resurrection

Thou didst rise today from the grave, O merciful one, = and hast=20 led us out of the gates of death. Today Adam dances for joy and Eve = rejoices,=20 and with them the prophets and patriarchs unceasingly sing of the divine = triumph=20 of Thy power.

The prokeimenon

O chant unto our God, chant ye; chant unto our king, = chant ye.=20 Stichos: Clap your hands, all ye nations; shout unto God with a = voice of=20 rejoicing. Alleluia: In Thee, O Lord, have I hoped, let me not be = put to=20 shame in the age to come. Stichos: Be Thou unto me a God to = defend me and=20 a house of refuge to save me.

Verses on the beatitudes
